Greeting 2014, I decided to make a plan for the new year. And as I was searching the Internet for useful information, I came across an interesting aticle written by Hannah Waters. (http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/culturing-science/2012/12/30/new-years resolution/). It said " DO NOT TELL ANYONE about what you want to do in 2013". The act of announcing what you aim to do to friends and family, and hearing their approval, provides similar satisfaction to achieving the goal, giving you a ¡°premature sense of completeness". And with your self-satisfaction meter already half-full before you start, the motivation to work hard is sapped.
Also, there was a study about the same subject. There, it said "Other people¡¯'s taking notice of one¡¯'s identity-relevant intentions apparently engenders a premature sense of completeness regarding the identity goal." Both the article and the study insisted that telling others about one's resolution can bring a premature sense of completeness, leading a failure to achieving the resolution.
Before reading the article, I thought that I should always tell others, especially friends and family, about my resolution so that I could get their help with achieving it. Thus, I decided to do a survey about the effect of telling others one's resolution. I made five questions for the survey. These are the five.
⦁ Did you plan a new year resolution last year?
⦁ Did you plan the resolution with someone else?
⦁ Was the resolution satisfactory?
⦁ Did you tell others about the resolution?
⦁ Did you achieve the resolution?
I surveyed eighteen of my korean friends and there was a big problem. Only two of eighteen friends had make a new year resolution. Now, a survey done by two people cannot be considered as a meaningful survey. Thus, I changed the surveyee. This time, I surveyed thirty-three of my singaporean friend using Facebook. Thirty out of thirty-three had make a new year resolution. No one made it with others, and all of them were satisfied with the resolution. There were nineteen of them, who told their resolution to others, and eleven of them, who did not tell others about their resolution. seven of nineteen, who told others about their resolution, had accomplished their resolution. nine of eleven, who did not tell others about their resolution, had accomplished their resolution.
From this survey, I checked that the article and the study were true. Different from the thing that I have known, telling others about one's resolution was uneffective for accomplishing a resolution.
Although I have checked that the article and the study were true, I had to make focus on another point. Only two of eighteen korean students made a new year resolution. Unlike that, thirty of thirty-three singaporean students made a new year resolution. This is an odd outcome since Korea is paying attention to self directed learning. Self directed learning is a way of learning that the learner him/herself decides from the decision to participate to selection of education program and evaluation of education. This includes making a resolution by him/herself. However, only a few students are making their own resolution. Even if there is a good information about making a resolution, such as "Do not tell others about your resolution", mentioned in the study and the article, it is a useless information if you do not make a resolution.
These are the four main takeaways, Richard Wiseman, author of the excellent 59 Seconds: Change Your Life in Under a Minute, compiled based on research.
⦁Just pick one resolution. More than that is too hard.
⦁Break the goal into steps. Have a plan.
⦁Reward yourself for progress.
⦁Realize you may screw up. Keep at it.
